The establishment of an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. chapter in Erie, PA began with the efforts of Rubye Jenkins in 1974. She other members in the Erie City and Erie County area knew the positive impact a local chapter could make in the areas of education and human services.
Recruitment efforts began immediately to identify and inform local members already in the Erie City and Erie County area of the plan to charter a chapter. Recruitment expanded to the graduating members of the Epsilon Psi Chapter located on the campus of Edinboro State College as well as members transitioning in the community as a result of employment relocations.
It took several years to fulfill the Alpha Kappa Alpha national requirements for the establishment of a graduate chapter.
On July 9, 1978, the dream became a reality and the Mu Nu Omega chapter was chartered by Madelyn Hairston-Giddens, Great Lakes Regional Director. The sixteen charter members of the Mu Nu Omega Chapter included: Barbra Burgess, Sharon Cook, Carolyn Cuby, Gloria Furcron, Armendia Dixon, Louise Hill, Cynthia Horton, Pauline Hurd, Donna Hughes, Gina M. January, Rubye Jenkins, Charlise Moore, Bernice Overton, Barbara Sims, Elizabeth Pierce-Stewart, and Kathy Williams.
Gloria Furcron was elected as the first chapter president.
Immediately upon the establishment of the Mu Nu Omega Chapter, the chapter began to make a positive impact in the community via the establishment of a number of programs to meet the needs of the Erie Community.
40 years later and the Mu Nu Omega Chapter continues to serve the Erie Community through dedicated service and successful programming.
